Footfriend - Athlete’s Foot Treatment

Also known as tinea pedis or a fungal infection of the skin, athlete’s foot can be treated effectively by the experts at Footfriend.

Diagnosis & symptoms

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection of the skin and can be diagnosed with a clinical consultation. Positive identification is essential as many skin complaints look very similar, for example dermatitis and psoriasis.

It may have two classic appearances depending on the site infected:

1. If the infection is between your toes the skin often has a white, soggy appearance. There may also be fissuring (cracks/splits) in the skin between your toes.

2. Fungal skin infections either on the top or sole of your foot are often visible as dry, red, scaly patches which may or may not have spots in them. These spots are usually very small blisters with a clear to yellow coloured fluid in them.

The affected areas are often quite itchy and you will most probably be driven to scratching the area which can increase the inflammation and discomfort of the skin in the affected area.

Typical causes

Athlete’s foot is usually as a result of infection with a naturally occurring fungi residing on the skin. Athlete’s foot infection develops when the fungi has the right conditions to proliferate or if the fungus is introduced through a crack in our skin. These parasitic fungi are typically transmitted in moist communal areas where people go barefoot, such as around swimming pools or in changing rooms and public showers. They can be spread to elsewhere on your body by scratching infected areas or if not treated effectively..

Patient Stories

I first visited Footfriend eight years ago when I needed urgent attention for an ingrowing toenail, which was so bad, it was constantly bleeding. I received an emergency same day appointment and received attention, which gave me immense pain relief. I returned a few days later and on removal of the dressing all was back to normal. The discomfort I encountered on that occasion made me visit Footfriend every six weeks for continued professional maintenance of my feet, which I have never regretted. During all these years I have a couple of toes which from time to time ingrow and create discomfort but because of having the regular attention Damian is excellent in knowing my problems and treating them accordingly. Regular attention to my feet certainly works for me and I wouldn’t go without it and I recommend Footfriend extremely highly to anyone who encounters similar problems or just requires simple foot maintenance. Its well worth it.”

B.Valentine, Beverley

I have been visiting Footfriend now for over 12 years. During this time, I have found the standard of care and service to be first class. As I get older, I find visiting a professional very superior to trying to care for my feet and toes myself.

“Since childhood I have suffered from foot problems and have been to several chiropodists with varying degrees of success. When my last chiropodist retired he recommended Damian Johns in Beverley. My wife and I have now been patients of Damian for over 10 years and we are very pleased with him. His practice provides a wide range of foot care including excellent footwear, foot supports and referrals for further specialized foot treatment. The reception staff are very welcoming and are able to offer appointments to suit patients lifestyle. I would recommend anyone with foot concerns to consult Damian for help and advice.”

“I just wanted to say thank you for the competent and friendly treatment I received on Thursday last week. My feet haven't felt so comfortable in ages and the squidgy thing for between my toes is really very comfortable and will hopefully keep the corns at bay. It shouldn't be a surprise but it's amazing how much happier I feel with less painful and uncomfortable feet! Thanks once again.”
